Large digital-images/photos slow down the loading of a web page!

The computer-monitor only displays 72-DPI (Dots/inch); also, many browsers are set for a maximum of 800-pixels (width). Websites use GIF and JPEG images.

Many ISPs (for instance: AOL) restrict your sending/receiving "high-resolution" images by email.

We recommend shooting your photos at the highest, possible resolution/size; this allows them to be printed into large, clear photos. Low-resolution photos (used on websites) will print/look "fuzzy". Examples

  • The following "thumbnail-photo" (3,824-bytes) - as shown twice below - is 99-pixels wide and 75-pixels-high ... it downloads quickly; viewers then decides if they want to open the larger photo(s)

  • Each may be "clicked" to show a larger-photo ... try printing each photo

    • "Web-sized" photo (146,041-bytes) is 733-pixels wide by 550-pixels high; also, this photo has been "down-graded" to 72-dpi (dots-per-inch)

    • "Original" photo (2,069,748-bytes ["2-Meg, Mb or Mega-bytes"]) is 2272-pixels wide by 1704-pixels high ... it is larger than your screen, and, slow to download

When/if this Icon appears (lower right-hand corner of your large-image - as you rest your cursor/pointer on it, it is  because your browser has automatically reduced the large-photo to fit your screen)

Click the Icon to expand the Large-photo to "full-size"

Click to open
"Web-sized" photo

Click to open
"Original" photo

Now "batch-reduce" the high-resolution images to accommodate website-viewing. You can use many of the well-know photo-editing programs (PhotoShop, PhotoDraw, etc.), or, download a free program from:

  • PicSizer (batch-processing): www.axiomx.com/picsizer.htm - we use it

  • IrfanView (editing and batch-processing)  http://www.irfanview.com

  • We recommend 640-pixels wide by 480-pixels high - at 72-dpi - for web-viewing

  • We then create the thumbnailed-photos as we place them in a web-page.

Hope this helps ... Elton
